The Youth Writers Series is designed to help young people develop their skills writers and to learn various forms of writing including creative/fiction, non-fiction, screenwriting, poetry and more. In addition youth writers have the opportunity to be published in the RIU anthology and compete to become the city’s Youth Poet Laureate.
The series is held every Tuesday, starting December 1, at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint from 6pm-7pm.
The RIU Instructor for this series is Qiana Towns, a writer, editor, and educator. She is a Cave Canem fellowship graduate and editor for Reverie: Midwest African-American Literature. Most recently, her work has appeared in the Crab Orchard Review. Qiana’s poem. Social Regard, was selected as the 2015 Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Prize by the Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature. She is a writer-in residence for the Writers @ The Carr program in Detroit. In 2015, she published her first book, This is Not the Exit.
